CASE STUDY

Hi everyone! Today we had to pick a film opening and analyze it. We needed to identify examples of camera shots, angle movement, and depth of field. For my movie I chose Twilight (2008), as it is one of my favorite movies! I hope you enjoy

Film opening: Twilight (2008)

At 0:20, the screen is black, but Bella's voice-over begins and says, "I'd never given much thought to how I would die." At 0:23, an establishing shot of the forest appears. The combination of the voice-over, which talks about uncertainty and death, with the muted colors creates an isolating mood and a mysterious/eerie vibe, which makes the audience feel a sense of danger or uncanniness.

At 0:28, a high-angle shot looks down on the deer, making it seem small and vulnerable. The forest is quiet, and the voice-over stops for a moment as we see the deer look and sniff around. The camera shifts from a steady to a shaky movement at 0:36-1:04, which is soon revealed as the predator's perspective. This makes the viewers feel nervous and more aware that danger is coming.

0:47-0:50 We see a POV shot from the predator's perspective as it rushes towards the deer, which remains still, gazing at the predator in confusion, until it begins to run. The soundtrack intensifies as the deer starts running through the woods. We then switch into a tracking shot as the deer runs through the woods. At 1:05, the predator catches up to the deer, and we see a fast motion of the predator attacking the deer in a close-up. This sudden violence had confirmed the viewers feelings of danger and nervousness.

At 1:06-1:26, the setting shifts to Phoenix with a mid-shot that slowly zooms in on Bella. The contrast of color shifts from muted to warm as she enters the desert. At 1:27, there is a two-person shot that shows Bella and her mother saying goodbye. Esme is being affectionate, hugging Bella and kissing her cheek, but Bella is shrugging her off with awkwardness, wanting to get the moment over with. This scene makes Bella seem like a normal teenager and relatable.

By 1:46, we get an over-the-shoulder shot which shows Bella looking out the car window as music begins, which creates a sense of starting something new and wonder for what Bella's new life will be.
