Case Study Mise Un Scene!

Hi guys, welcome back!! Today in my class we were asked to review a specific scene from a movie or show and analyze its mise-en-sne.

This is the scene I chose for my case study:

And here is my review!

Setting:

The Dunder Mifflin office, a standard work environment with desks, computers, plants, etc., is where the scene is set. However, the scene turns into chaos when Dwight's fake fire drill starts. While maintaining a humorous, exaggerated tone, the little office area, cluttered and filled with smoke, fosters a sense of panic.

Lighting:

The lighting remains bright and realistic, similar to an actual office, which enhances the humor of the situation. Even with the smoke filling the room, the lighting stays clear, allowing viewers to see every reaction as the employees scramble around frantically.

Costume:

The characters are dressed in their usual office attire—business suits, blouses, and ties—which contrasts with their unprofessional behavior during the chaos. Seeing adults in formal clothes acting so childlike adds to the comedic effect of the scene.

Props:

Props are used creatively within the scene. They include items commonly found in an office, such as smoke machines, printers, fire extinguishers, and even Angela’s cat. Kevin uses a chair to break the vending machine, Oscar climbs up to the ceiling, and Angela throws her cat up there. These actions contribute to the humor and heighten the sense of panic, as the characters seem unsure of what to do.

Body Language and Expression:

The characters' body language is very expressive. Michael flails his arms and shouts, while Dwight remains focused and serious, trying to maintain control. The others display signs of panic—wide eyes, shouting, and rushed movements. Their facial expressions and actions clearly convey fear, but the audience can tell the scene is exaggerated for comedic effect.

Overall Meaning:

The mise en scene shows how stress can easily turn a workplace into a chaotic place. Standard lighting, props, and setting are all used in this scenario to turn fear into humor. The characters' exaggerated reactions are meant to make the viewer laugh and recognize the humor those movements. It emphasizes Dwight's need for control, demonstrates Michael's ineffective leadership despite being the boss, and reveals how dysfunctional the office really is.

Thank you for reading my review! I hope you enjoyed <3
